Culture Jamming

The Simpsons series is known for its outrageous and hilarious introductory scenes, each with a unique twist at the end. However, in the episode that was aired on October 10th 2010, the opening gag was regarded controversial. The scene was created by an English graffiti artist, Banksy, in which he depicted several sensitive issues, such as sweatshops, child labor and animal cruelty. This concept is known as culture jamming, in which exhibiting delicate issues through the means of mass media tests the limits of social norms.

Cultural jamming is a methodology where the response of individuals to advertisements is considered whilst imitating various other forms of advertisements to modify the intended message.

Cultural jamming in such a form where political realities are brought to light can possibly create some awareness but not at the cost of mocking someone else’s demise of life. There are other ways of bringing the topic to the table instead of this. In conclusion, audience’s interest cannot be compromised for commercialization of content.
